Andy Smith practices in the Retail & Hospitality practice group and Insurance Coverage team as Special Counsel where he represents a wide variety of businesses and insurance companies in both personal injury claims and insurance disputes. He is also a member of the Criminal Defense team where he represents clients charged with both state and federal criminal offenses.
Prior to joining Collins & Lacy, Andy served as an assistant solicitor in both the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office and the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, representing the state in criminal prosecutions in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Allendale, Colleton, Richland, and Kershaw Counties. In his role as an assistant solicitor, he managed a large caseload of both felony and misdemeanors cases, and was responsible for reviewing case facts, consulting with arresting agencies, interviewing witnesses and victims, determining the appropriate charge, indicting the charge for prosecution, and trying cases on behalf of the State of South Carolina.
Andy is also a member of the Steering Committee for DRI’s Young Lawyer Committee, and through that role, works with lawyers throughout the country on research and advocacy for businesses and insurance carriers.
Outside of work, Andy enjoys reading, fishing, and tending to his garden. A native of Sugar Tit, South Carolina, he also can often be found hiking with his wife Abbey and dog Roux in the Blue Ridge mountains. An avid Atlanta Braves and Alabama Crimson Tide fan, he often says that he missed his calling as a sports statistician. Andy is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina Honors College, where he teaches a class on the United States Constitution with firm co-founder Joel Collins.
